🦋 IC Information
Character Name: Maelle
Age: 16
Canon: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Canon Point: End of Act II
Character History: wiki
Canon Abilities: Maelle is a skilled fighter, even at 16. Her weapon of choice is the rapier. She can summon and dismiss it at will. Maelle's skill tree involves a lot of fire/burning based abilities, but for RP sake I will keep those as offensive skills so she's not setting herself on fire every time a fight breaks out.
Inventory:
- Expedition 33 uniform
- rapier
- journal
🦋 Personality
- If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?
- If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.
- What is your character's most outstanding personality trait, and why?
- Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?
If Maelle could have one wish, it would be for the Paintress to have never come into existence. In her world, the Paintress is a mysterious being that appeared after the world shattered. Each year, on her giant monolith visible from Lumiere, she paints a number. The people of that age die in what is called the Gommage. And each year, an expedition is sent in hopes of defeating her. Naturally, life is quite depressing and sad when you know exactly how many years you have left to live. No more Paintress means no more Gommage, means no more orphans made and lovers split apart and families broken. Maelle finds life to be understandably bleak when you'll simply be erased from existence at the whim of some mysterious being a continent away. Ridding the world of the Paintress would mean people get to actually live their lives out to the fullest. Maelle would live past her early twenties, and the people she cares about would still be there to grow older beside her.
Gustave, Maelle's guardian. Considered a difficult child due to her nightmares and running away, Maelle was eventually taken in by Gustave and his sister Emma. Maelle and Gustave quickly became inseparable. He's a bit too young to be her father, but he raised her as if he were. While there's respect between them, there's ample playfulness, too. They could never quite figure out if he was more her father or her older brother, but the most important thing was the love between them. He and Maelle tease one another, and have a comfortable, easy rapport. Maelle loves him so much that when it came time for his expedition, when he had only a year left to live before his Gommage, she decided to go with him despite having at least nine years left until hers. Yes, some of that was because she wished to get away from Lumiere and experience more of the world, but she also didn't want to be there without him. So, she followed him to the continent, for better or for worse. Despite it going terribly from the moment they landed on the beach, she would make the decision every time. She trusts Gustave completely, and with her whole heart. He's her family and her hero.
Maelle's most outstanding trait is resilience. Maelle has lost her biological parents, believing them to have had her as an accident as their Gommage occurred when she was three. Adopted families that took her in returned her, unable to manage her nightmares and running away. And, eventually, she loses the family that finally stuck, the man that was a father and a brother to her, right before her very eyes. Instead of giving up and falling into despair, she uses her pain and grief as fuel to continue on. When one falls, we continue is an expeditioner motto, but it became personal for Maelle. What was a mission to save their world became a mission to avenge her loved one. Gustave would have wanted her to fight, and also to live--the sorrow and the anger didn't consume her. It drew her closer to her friends, and from them she learned to feel her heartbreak while still moving forward.
Maelle is not particularly inclined to return home. Lumiere was home, but she always felt out of place. In a city of orphans, she bounced around from home to home. She did find one, eventually, but even so she preferred to be alone unless she was spending time with Gustave. She didn't often partake in festivities, and her apprenticeship often had her on the move. Maelle is under the impression their expedition failed, and therefore humanity was doomed, anyway. She might be curious to see what Lumiere would look like without human influence for fifty, a hundred years, but she would only mourn the ghosts of people who were already gone. She would miss the buildings and the places she would spend her time with Gustave most of all, though she would think Gustave would be upset to see his home lost and abandoned. That might make her sad, but ultimately, a place is just a place. She's already lost the people she cares most about.
